pumpkin patch update

Things are finally looking up in the pumpkin patch.  With the sun arriving late for summer, I was a bit worried, but things have taken a turn for the better and I'm finally getting some female flowers and two seem to have taken hold.

  2. Hello October Boy... Dr. Theda of 2nd Street here... Stacey E. Lemmon 204 Franklin St. Marshville, NC 28103 ... Just looking for other pumpkin patch growers appreciate correspondance with others as this is my first time growing a garden ... I can receive E_Mail but cannot respond... My patch has taken over where I planted & areas around it ... Good luck And watch out for the squash bugs ... if you see them in your garden look for Egg casings as more of these "Stink Bugs" will soon emerge...

  3. Hello again Dr. Theda here ... I now have 14 pumpkins (had to harvest one early today, the vine had died and was rotting towards the fruit.)the one that was growing in the tree was eaten by slugs... my others are now protected from them by a barrier of Sand, My largest is "Gordo" a warty pumpkin weighing about 30lbs..!!
This my first gardening project... at least I have had some success ... Mr. Kreeg's house from the movie "Trick-r-Treat".... less than 70 days until Halloween!

  4. How great! I did not have as much luck as you. I only got two pumpkins this year and none near 30lbs! I did get about 7 "gourds" that look like pumpkins, but they are not. I don't know if the seeds get mixed up in the packets or what. I guess thats what you get when you shop the "box" stores. Next year I am just drying out my seeds from my jacks and using those. At least I will know what I am planting!

  5. Thanks for the response... I just finished tending my pumpkin patch... (in just materials , these pumpkins have cost me over $20.oo each...) but, It still gives a spot to go to temporally "escape" from my many troubles and worries if only for a short while... Another "hopeful had begun to rot so I had to remove it this morning...still have 3 "hopefuls ( one doing very well...for now.)

  6. Glad to hear it! I know what you mean about escaping...My patch is behind the fence in the wetland, where I have a bench so I can hang out and relax.
I would have posted more info or pictures, but our camera is missing in action for about a month now. Might have to buy a new one.... Folks always seem to love post's with pictures more!

  8. Hello Again... My pumpkin patch has gotten to be rather "depressing" as of late...Slugs have destroyed two more pumpkins and caused another larger one to have to be harvested very early...(I am using quantities of sand as a barrier to keep them at bay) Someone even stabbed one of my larger ones near the road...although the hole has healed over, the pumpkin is apparently rotting from inside ....most of the rest of them are doing ok ...for now.. I managed to obtain some DDT which I mixed some of to battle all those other garden pests.. and a batch of new "Hopefuls" have arrived... at least three of them should survive... Bills and money situation has me down ($300.oo water bill Pumpkins take a lot of water...) Hanging in there for now ...Wish you and yours the best Bye for now Dr.Theda

  9. Sounds like you have put a lot of work into those guys Dr. Theda! I remember reading somewhere that pumpkins where "very easy to grow" I have not found that to be true- in fact, the more work I put into them, the less yield I get..so go figure. The weather here is starting to shift and I think my plants are done. As soon as I get my camera back I will post what this years harvest was. Good luck to you!
